The scene where Dazai slaps Atsushi is actually so interesting in the context of the whole chapter.

Dazai has just been reminded of his own past, his misdeeds and trauma. Higuchi calls him cruel and more fit for the mafia than anyone, Mori has offered him his job back, Q has been released. And honestly it’s probably destabilizing the current sense of self he has built up over the last few years.

Him wondering if he should be worrying about the morality of his own plans given how low Mori is willing to go RIGHT before he hits Atsushi is so interesting. It’s not something he would usually do, he knows it’s wrong, he even says he has no right, but old wounds have just been reopened and part of him DOES still believe in Mori’s teachings. He still feels some sort of respect for his old mentor even through the resentment. And even though releasing Q is not actually all that logical.

I feel like the slap is partially him falling back into old habits due to stress, and a bit self directed. Like he knows he’s a hypocrite and that he himself is currently wallowing in past miseries and the perceptions of their evil guardians that they desperately want to drop but fear are true, but he wants them both to let it go and continue on with their lives.

I think Dazai tends to associate Atsushi’s relationship with the headmaster with his relationship with Mori, at least subconsciously. Everytime he gives Atsushi advice about him it always kind of feels like he might be talking about Mori. And I think the ending of Beast definitely gives weight to that.

I'd like to point out that Mori did this shit (pretending that he's caught to gather information, and then "Oh, no, my hot, badass situationship should come and rescue me now, I guess. Even though I can do it myself in 0.01 seconds.") once and now Dazai refuses to let it go and implement any other tactic.

The way Mori probably has some sort of trauma from the War ( I desperately need more lore about this man).

Mori finally bans toys from all mafia meetings after Dazai and Chuuya got bored at a very important negotiation and initiated a water gun fight with each other. Bringing game consoles was already pushing it, but the water guns were the last straw.

This backfires however, when at the next meeting they both attend, Dazai once again gets bored and just pulls out an actual gun and starts shooting at Chuuya. Who catches the bullets with his ability and proceeds to pelt Dazai with them in return.
